なんて優しい音楽なんだろう。そして、なんて胸がしめつけられる歌なんだろう。
内容はわからなくても、初めて聴いたときからずっと好きな曲でした。
母親の顔のしわであるとか、絶望だとか、お墓とか、なんとも悲しさを秘めた歌だとは思っていたけれど、実はこの歌の背景には北アイルランド問題があって、英国国教会側とカトリック側にそれぞれ生まれた恋人のことを歌っているのだと後で知り、なるほど、それで不毛の地とかバリケードが出てくるんだと納得。
世界中で争いの耐えない今の時代、なおさら深く心に染みてくる名曲です。
